Through Drama we aim to develop our pupils' confidence by regular engagement in wide range of performance-based tasks
and activities.
In English lessons a drama text will be studied each term, using a range of plays from classic to modern. Each year a Shakespeare text will also be studied using active teaching methods and pupils may be found regularly working in groups for performance in the hall or across several classrooms. Confidence building within the cooperative environment of a professional team and enjoyment of presentation for an audience of artefacts, technical skills or performance are our goals.
Classroom activities are supplemented with a range of extra -curricular opportunities including regular theatre trips and workshops and drama club. Junior drama pupils are developing a range of skills, including mime and street dance.
Our aim is that every pupil will have three or four performance opportunities through their school career in plays, musicals or drama festivals and we also regularly provide large scale performances where all pupils may be included but principal parts are offered though audition. We hope to support both those with a great deal of experience outside College and those with little or none, to achieve fulfilment and develop their vocal and physical skills.
GCSE
Our pupils are also well equipped to face formal exams and we currently offer the early entry GCSE English set the chance to pursue the Drama GCSE course in the remaining months of year 11. Some will choose to offer technical skills and recently several pupils have had great success in lighting design, costume and make-up.
A level
Theatre Studies is popular at A level and every year some of the group move on successfully to university courses in performance or technical skills. We work very closely with the music department and often share in performances with Reading School.
