Following an engaging programme

The Music Department at St Joseph's College aims to create a love of music in all pupils. Through both performance and academic study, pupils will learn to enjoy and appreciate music

As well as specialist classroom teaching, all pupils are given the opportunity to receive extra-curricular tuition in at least one musical instrument and can participate in a great variety of musical groups and ensembles. We hope our pupils will all grow into confident musicians with a love of music that will last them far beyond their school years.

The Music Department stages excellent full-scale concerts every term. These are very popular with parents and guests. Many of our pupils successfully achieve grade 8 in their instruments before leaving the College. The department benefits from two fine performance spaces: the Theatre and the impressive Music Hall, where concerts are held every term. The Music Department works closely with the English and Drama departments in staging impressive school productions and are a vital part of the liturgical life of the College. The department have also embarked upon several exciting music tours, travelling to France, Italy and Ireland; performing in venues as prestigious as St Peter's Basilica in Rome and St Mark's in Venice.

In Years 7 to 9 pupils learn to read and understand music through performance, composition and listening. They follow a comprehensive and engaging programme of music appreciation through all periods and styles, including classical periods, pop, jazz and ethnic music.

At GCSEmusic proves to be consistently popular with many pupils who go on to study it futher at A level.  Lessons are taught in specially equipped music classrooms and a number of practice rooms are available for peripatetic music lessons and private practice.

The department offers A Level Music courses, which prove to be consistently popular, with many pupils continuing to study music at university. Lessons are taught in specially equipped music classrooms and a number of practice rooms are available for peripatetic music lessons and private practice.
